Counting in your head is allowed. Nothing on screen moves while the stopwatch is hidden.

How to use

Pick a target of 5, 10 or 30 seconds, then click, tap or press Space on the stopwatch to start.

The time is visible for the first 1.5 seconds and then hides. Stop the stopwatch the moment you think the target time has passed.

Each round shows how far off you were in seconds and as a percentage of the target, and whether you stopped early or late.

After 5 rounds you get your average error, your closest round and your overall lean. Personal bests are kept separately for each target in this browser.

FAQ

How accurate are people at judging time without a clock?

It varies between people and from day to day. Research on time perception generally finds that timing errors grow roughly in proportion to the length of the interval, so being a second off at 30 seconds is about as precise as being a third of a second off at 10 seconds. That is why the result also shows your error as a percentage.

Why does the stopwatch hide after 1.5 seconds?

Seeing the first moment confirms that the clock has started, and hiding the rest means you rely on your own sense of time. Nothing on screen moves while it is hidden, so there is no visual rhythm to follow.

Is counting in my head allowed?

Yes. Counting is allowed and often makes estimates steadier. Try a few runs with and without counting and compare the results.

How is the error calculated?

Error is the time you stopped minus the target. A positive value means you stopped late and a negative value means early. The percentage divides that error by the target. The headline score is the average of the absolute errors over 5 rounds, and the lean is the average of the signed errors.

Does my device affect the result?

Only slightly. Screen and input delays are small compared with typical timing errors, but for the closest comparison use the same device and input each time. Nothing is uploaded, and personal bests stay in this browser.
